This speech helped to inspire me to write this letter to the editor of my local paper:

To the Editor:

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, legislators are rushing to pass more gun control laws, which will make it harder for law abiding citizens to own a gun, and won't stop the criminals from getting one. However, these politicians, as well as the media and some American people, seem to have forgotten the reason for the 2nd amendment. It is not to shoot deer, as Governor Cuomo just stated while passing sweeping new legislation in the dark of night, nor is it even to protect oneself against criminals, though that is certainly a right that the Founders would agree with. The real reason for the 2nd amendment is to protect the American People from a tyrannical government. The text is "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary for the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The militia it speaks of is comprised of the citizens, apart from the government. This is the last line of defense the American People have to protect themselves from a government that has turned against them. On January 20th, thousands of people across the country gathered in rallies in state capitols in support of gun rights. At one such rally, a survivor of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Communist China, spoke about how his experience: "We grew frustrated by the restrictions of personal freedoms and corrupted Chinese government and we thought peaceful protest would make the country better. Our young passion and patriotism was crushed by a hail full of metal jackets...We could not fight back, we were unarmed. " He went on to say that the Chinese Constitution was a "worthless piece of paper" because the people had no way to fight the force of government. Mao Tse Tung stated "Political power comes out of the barrel of a gun". Could
this be the real reason some politicians want to restrict our gun rights? A growing number of Americans are afraid of the ever increasing power of the federal government. They see increased surveillance, a president who goes around congress through executive orders, and a new law that allows government to imprison Americans on American soil without trial, as stated in the NDAA act. Some county sheriffs are starting to state that they will not follow an order by the federal government to confiscate the guns of law abiding citizens. However, a minority of the people cannot protect the rest of Americans unless they wake up to the dangerous situation we are in, and join in the protest of these proposed new gun regulations currently being drafted by politicians in congress and in some states. If we lose the right to bear arms, we lose our freedom.
